What is a Dental Emergency?

Emergency dental treatments may be performed in normal surgery times or outside of standard operating hours so that you get the help you need for your dental problems, regardless of whether they occur on the weekend, while on holiday, or when the clinic is closed.

Missing teeth due to trauma
If you sustain trauma to your mouth and lose a tooth, it is crucial to act quickly to preserve the tooth root and ensure the greatest chance for successful reimplantation.
Severely chipped or cracked teeth
A severely cracked or broken tooth can cause intense discomfort and leaves your teeth vulnerable to decay and infection.
An abscessed tooth
A Dental abscess is a serious condition which can escalate if not managed. A pocket of pus forms around the tooth root or gum, causing an infection. In addition to swelling and fever, an abscess can spread the infection to the surrounding tissues and blood vessels, potentially affecting other areas of your body, if not managed.
Excessive post-surgical bleeding
While some minor bleeding can occur following dental surgeries, such as tooth extraction or implant procedure, excess blood loss may indicate post-surgical complications or infection.
What to Expect at An Emergency Dental Appointment

Here is what you can expect at an emergency appointment:
Initial Examination
Our dental team thoroughly assesses the condition of your teeth and gums clinically and may, where indicated, use X-rays or a 3D CBCT scanner for the most accurate digital images if required.
A diagnosis and personalized treatment plan
After identifying the issue, your dentist will discuss this with you together with the available options for treatment, together with the risks or each, alternatives and costs. After discussion, a recommended course of treatment will be outlined for you and carried out.
Anaesthesia
Where required, the dentist will apply a local anaesthetic before any dental procedure to numb the area and improve your comfort.
Treating infection
If your emergency is due to infection, your dentist will address this using a number of techniques to allow drainage or treatment of the infection. This can include access and nerve removal, tooth extraction, or incision and drainage.
Repairs and restoration
Depending on the extent and severity of your emergency, your dentist may apply a temporary or permanent restoration to the injured tooth. It is not always possible or appropriate to provide a permanent restoration during an emergency appointment.

We recommend that you book a follow-up appointment so that we can track the progress of your treatment and ensure proper healing and required ongoing treatment for the diagnosed condition.

Emergency care is not 24 hour. Emergencies should be seen within 24 hours.
The dentist on call will triage the emergency calls as appropriate. In some cases, calls received throughout the day will be grouped and seen towards the end of the day for convenience.
You will be expected to settle any emergency treatment fees at the time of treatment.
Dental emergencies can be challenging to diagnose and treat depending upon the presenting condition. A definitive fix is not always immediate.
Dental emergencies can be stressful for our patients. Please remember that our teams are there to help and assist, but the stress should not be transferred on to them. Aggression or the use on inappropriate language will not be tolerated.
